The newly-founded Wetumpka United Soccer Club hosted the Beecham United Soccer IQ Camp which saw 40 young athletes showcase their soccer skills at the Upper City Fields on Airey Street in Wetumpka. The soccer camp featured Coach Daniel Beechum, the Liverpool FCIA Junior Academy Director. Coach Beechum is UEFA and USSF licensed, Beechum has also been named the FC Delco Girls coach of the year with more than 20 years of coaching experience. The camp taught the attendees about playing out of the back, possession and penetration, switching to the point of attack amongst the many other techniques that are involved in the world-famous game of soccer. Wetumpka United Soccer Club Founder, Bill Lewis, states the camp’s 40 attendees ended up being a great turnout because they didn’t finalize a date until mid-June. Lewis also said “We are in the early stages of the program. Our ultimate goal is for each age group to be at an elite skill level for their age group. We would like to develop our players and create as much exposure as possible.” The camp is a five-day camp and will finish up on July 17th, according to Lewis. Mayor Willis says “This is exciting for our community, anytime we can assist our young people in learning, in any way, is a great opportunity. We are extremely supportive of this.”
